Year 1: 2020-2021

Welcome to Year 1. The teacher is Miss Douglas.

Hi Year one!

Please continue to check this page for updates on what you can do at home.

Monday 19th October 2020

 Hi Everyone,

Below is a link to the Wednesday Word. Please share the Gospel at home. What was Jesus trying to tell us? How will it change the way we act this week?

"Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." What do think Jesus meant for us to understand?

The readings of the previous two weeks told about Jesus explaining that people were not following what God had asked of them. It also told of God inviting all people to follow him not just a chosen few.

Find the reading in your copy of the Gospel at home and share as a family.

Send in a photo of you sharing the Gospel at home.

Where do you keep your copy of the Gospel or Bible?

Congratulations: Look who won last weeks Gospel challenge and new set of Rosary Beads.

Take Care and God Bless

In this weeks Gospel  Jesus spoke to us about seeds falling on different ground.

With God's support the plants will flourish.

As I came to school today I noticed this in the Church carpark.

The first picture shows a harsh and inhospitable environment.

However with a closer look I found a beautiful plant.

Let's do God's work and be like fertile soil.

Our challenge is to ensure that we help all the  people we meet to flourish like this beautiful flower.

Friday 26/6/2020

Monday 29th June is the feast of St Peter and St Paul, we would invite children to investigate the life of St Paul and share their information on Google Classroom.

Above are 4 images of St Paul, all are different but have similarities.

What is similar and what does it represent?

Below is a link to a simple animation about Paul’s life.

Please share this prayer to St Paul with your friends and family.

St Paul is a great example of how with God's help we can all change for the better.

Prayer to Saint Paul the Apostle

O Glorious Saint Paul, after persecuting the Church you became by God’s grace its most zealous Apostle. To carry the knowledge of Jesus, our Divine Saviour, to the uttermost parts of the earth, you joyfully endured prison, scourging, stoning, and shipwreck, as well as all manner of persecutions culminating in the shedding of the last drop of your blood for our Lord Jesus Christ. Obtain for us the grace to labour strenuously to bring the faith to others and to accept any trials and tribulations that may come our way. Help us to be inspired by your Epistles and to partake of your indomitable love for Jesus, so that after we have finished our course we may join you in praising Him in Heaven for all eternity. Amen.

God Bless

Mr O

Friday 26th June 2020

Happy Friday everyone, I hope you all managed to sleep well in this very warm weather!

Thank you all for another week of FANTASTIC work.

Just as a reminder, if you are in school on Monday & Tuesday you have Wednesday- Friday to complete any unfinished work. If you are in on Thursday and Friday you have the following week from Monday- Wednesday to complete any unfinished work therefore the Friday deadline does not apply to you. I hope this makes sense but please message on Google Classroom if you have any questions.

Don't forget to check out this brilliant new reading website.

If you have already finished all your work remember you can still access Accelerated Reader & Maths and complete the different daily challenges set on here and Google Classroom.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. :-)

Thursday 25th June 2020

Morning Year 1 and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BRUNO!!!! I look forward to us singing to you later! :-)

Check out this great reading website. You can read the books independently or if it's too tricky you can turn the sound on and have it read to you. This means you can access even more reading material, even if it's not at your level! There's loads and loads of different genres. This year it's super important to keep up with your reading over the holidays.

Have a lovely Thursday.

Wednesday 24th June 2020

Good Morning everyone,

Today's challenge is a photography one.

Go outside and enjoy the sunshine. Take a photo of what is around you. Here is mine from this morning from Parliament Hill viewpoint. Can you name any of London's landmarks in the photo? We will be looking more at landmarks in Geography next week.

Post your photos onto GC. Extra points for capturing wildlife such as squirrels, birds or butterflies.  Capture the essence of summer.

Today's London Youth Games Challenge is the Indian dribble. This is a technique in hockey and as some of you know hockey is one of my favorite sports.  It is a tricky skill to learn but once you have mastered turning the stick, it becomes much easier. Unfortunately I am not in school today so I can't upload a video of my Indian dribble but I will do one tomorrow. Get creative and try using a racket, a broom, an umbrella or any other type of stick. If you don’t have a hockey ball, you can try using a tennis ball or a pair of rolled up socks.

Tuesday 23rd June 2020

Morning everyone on this beautiful sunny Tuesday.

It is the first official week of summer. It is the season to go swimming in the sea, lakes, rivers, ponds, and in outdoor & indoor pools. Swimming is one of my favourite things to do, especially when it is nice weather. Swimming safety is of utmost importance. Remember never to swim alone and always swim where there is a lifeguard present. I am going to upload a 'Swim Safe' PowerPoint onto Google Classroom. I would like you read through it and then to write a checklist to help you plan a great day on the beach or by a lake. Think about clothing, equipment, weather, food/drink.

For more on swimming safety click on the links below to access fun and informative resources:

Have a happy Tuesday and don't forget sun safety too! Have you got your sun cream and hat?

Good Morning everybody and Happy Friday to you all!

Today is Friday which means at midday is the cut of for sending in your scores to London Youth Games for the challenges this week. There has been basketball, judo and football challenges... you still have 2 hours left to complete them and send in your scores, good luck!

Once again, I have been very impressed with all your super work you have completed this week, both in and out of school! I have loved seeing some of you and I look forward to seeing a few more of you next week.

Remember on Sunday it is Father's Day so if you haven't made a card yet, today's they day! Homemade cards are always much better than the ones you buy in shops and your parents can keep them as memories when they're older. I will put some pictures and links of ideas for Father's Day cards on GC (Google Classroom).

 Have fun!

Happy Wednesday everyone, I hope you are all well. I have just got back from my morning run around Hampstead Heath. It was not as sunny this morning but was still very beautiful. Today is "Wellness Wednesday".

Wellness Wednesday Tip 1: Stay hydrated.

Drinking enough water throughout the day is vital for our body to function correctly. If you struggle to drink regularly, do not force yourself to drink a large amount. Try drinking a small glass of water every hour. Have a look at the clock and at every hour remind your family to take a sip of water! This is especially important when it is warm weather like at the moment and we are doing lots of activities.

If you don’t like the taste of water try adding a slice of fresh lemon, cucumber, strawberry or a small drop of squash.

Virtual Games

Today is the kick up football challenge! - How many kick ups can you do in 60 seconds? This one is very tricky! I will post the instructions on Google Classroom which includes some tips.

Have a wonderful "Wellness Wednesday".

Tuesday 16th June 2020

Enjoy more of the beautiful sunshine today. :-)

Monday 8th June 2020

Good morning Year 1. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Who did some baking or gardening? If you have any photos from what you did at the weekend, please share them by emailing them to admin or posting them on our GC stream. We would all love to see them.

Today marks 'World Oceans Day', a global celebration of the world’s oceans. This year's theme is 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean'. This means to come up with new ideas on how to protect our oceans and all the living things in it. Every year millions of tonnes of plastic enter our oceans which causes many problems for all the creatures who live in them. We need to look at ways to stop wasting plastic and polluting them. Can you think of any? Today, to celebrate World Ocean Day  think about how you can reduce your use of plastic or how you can recycle what you do use. Make an information text about the different ways you can help protect our oceans. I will post some activities on Google Classroom too.

Have a happy Monday and remember together we can help to protect and restore our oceans!

I have been thinking about the plants you have been growing. I have just sown some cress seeds and if you look closely in the picture some of them have germinated already. Morning all and happy Wednesday. I went on an early cycle ride to Hampstead Heath this morning. I like it when it is quiet and peaceful. When I got there I walked around and explored some different areas I hadn't been to before. I found some really cool and beautiful places.

Go and explore a park or opened space area near you. Here are some fun activities you can try whilst your out:

You could go on a 'minibeast hunt'. This could link in nicely with your English work. Finding your three favourite animals or natural objects. Remember to describe what you find with some powerful adjectives/ descriptive vocabulary.

Please send in photos of the activities you do or you can post them on the GC stream because I really love seeing them and I know everyone else does too.

There are some creative activities to do on the link too so HAVE FUN and enjoy your day. X

Monday 1st June 2020

Good morning everyone. I hope you are all well and have had a lovely half term. Who played Mr O's game of guess the staff member from school? It is quite tricky, I am still trying to guess some of them.

It is the first day of June today which means it is not long until the first day of summer. This is on Saturday 20th June and it is the longest day of the year. It is called the 'Summer Solstice'.

Today there are four more lessons on Google Classroom which go live at 9am. They are:

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well and enjoying your Half term break.

I have a fun activity for you all to enjoy.

How well do you know the adults at St Paul's?

All you have to do is write the names of each of the adults under their photo. Sounds easy.

Things are not always as easy  as they first seem.

I will give bonus points if you can  include first name and surname.

Good Luck

Friday 22nd May 2020

Good Morning Year 1 and HAPPY FRIDAY.

I hope you all are well and have been able to enjoy the lovely weather. I loved seeing the photos of you measuring in the sunshine, it looks like you had lots of fun doing it. Please keep the photos coming.

I have loved reading the letters you have sent too, they make me feel very happy to hear what you have been busy doing at home.

Thank you so much for all your hard work this half term. It has been so impressive and incredibly creative. I am very proud of you all. A BIG thank you to your amazing parents too for all their help and support.

Later today I am going to post you performing the poem 'The Nut Tree' so look out for it. I am very excited about it because it is you all performing together from your homes!

Next week it is half term so there will be no work to complete on Google Classroom. So have a wonderful break.

If there is a wet day during half term, how about watching a 'feel good film'? Click on the link below to access a list of them. If you don't have the subscription to the source where they are streamed, there may be a free trial option for you. One of them listed is Finding Nemo, that is definitely one of my favourites!

Another thing to look at is the CAFOD website, see the link below and check out the activities.

I will speak to you today over in Google Classroom and then have a fantastic half term.

Thursday 21st May 2020

Morning everybody,

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful sunshine yesterday, it looks like it is going to be hot again today so don't forget your sun cream and hat. If you weren't able to take part in the 2 metre measuring activities yesterday, have a go today. You could even do what Maksymilian did and line up your toys in 2 metre lines!

Have you seen Mr O's post below? Today we celebrate the Feast of The Ascension which we know all about from our learning in RE last week. It is the 40th day after the Resurrection of Jesus, so it has been 40 days since Easter Day.  You all produced some brilliant artwork of The Ascension, look at it whilst you are reading the passage from St Matthew's Gospel.

Thank you for all your amazing work on Google Classroom.

I still need a few more recordings of verses from The Nut Tree Poem to put a whole performance together, so if you are able to upload one I would love it.

Have a lovely day and remember to stay active and enjoy the sunshine.

Wednesday 20/5/2020

In this weeks Gospel, Jesus talks to his Father. Explaining that he has completed his task on earth. Jesus tells his Father that he has shared his message with us and we understand. The gospel reflects many of the things we say at mass in our profession of our faith through the Nicene Creed.

Take some time  this week to reflect on the Nicene Creed and our beliefs.

Wednesday 20th May 2020

Good morning all,

I hope you manage to enjoy some of the glorious sunshine today.

When you are outside can you measure different things? Try and find things which are 2 metres long/wide/tall? Do you know someone 2 metres tall? Do you have a tape measure or a ruler? Can you make your own metre stick to do some measuring?

Remember there are 100 centimetres in a metre.

How many jumps can you do in 2 metres?

How many hops can you do in 2 metres?

Can you find other things inside your home which are 2 metres? Think of floors and doors too.

Have a lovely day and happy measuring.

Tuesday 19th May 2020

Morning everyone.

I have another song for you to listen to...

The 10 Warped Lessons From Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory

Which phonic sounds can you hear in the song? Try writing some down. After you can write some of your own sentences using the sounds you wrote down. Just like you do so brilliantly in phonics. Don't forget your amazing joined up handwriting.

Phonics play is still free for you all to use, so go and play some games over there using the login details below:

Username: march20

Password: home

Begin with phase 3 and then you can make your way up to phase 6.

Well done to everyone with your hard work yesterday on Google Classroom. I have already seen and heard some fantastic rain storms you have created using different objects you have found at home.

For the Maths on direction and position, I have posted some extra resources on Google Classroom for further support and to extend your learning. I will post them again below:

Have a GREAT Tuesday!

Monday 18th May 2020

Friday 15th May 2020

Morning to you all and happy Friday.

This week I have read some amazing adventure stories, seen some fantastic pictures of The Ascension, brilliant life cycles of a plant AND I have been very impressed with all your excellent fraction work. Also the continuous work on Accelerated Maths and Reader has been terrific.

I can't wait to continue with your learning on Monday on Google Classroom...look out for some new topics!

This weekend how about creating an obstacle course at home?...

Can you blindfold a family member and lead them around? How did you do as a partner? Could you try doing the same course but, on your knees? Take turns... who was the best athlete and who was the best support person (gave the best instructions)?

Can you create/make your own medals?

You could have a medal ceremony – gold, silver, bronze medals given out.

Get into the spirit of the Olympics by making some DIY medals with ...

Have a wonderful weekend, keep active and keep smiling :-)

Good morning Year 1.

Well done for continuing to send in all your brilliant work on Google Classroom. I have loved seeing it all. How about doing some different animal movements today to stay active at home. Have a look at what to do here:

Watch this video too:

It is very similar to what we have done in PE in the school hall before. Think about the pace of your animal, how they change direction and if they move in similar patterns. Listen to your music carefully and move with the pace of the tune. How about you begin with this song:

Image result for animals in motion | Jaguar animal, Animals beautiful

Have a look at all the other PE activities and games you can try on Youth Sport Trust here:

Have a wonderful day and I hope the sunshine stays. Well done to Alan who got 100% in his reading quiz yesterday. Fantastic!

In this weeks Gospel, Jesus tells the disciples that he will not leave them alone. He will ask God, to send the Holy Spirit to be with them. The Gospel tells us that Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to support us.

Take some time  this week to see the Holy Spirit both in yourself  and in others.

Morning all and happy Wednesday. Today how about writing some sentences with some of our different phonics sounds? Don't forget your sound buttons and to count how many frog fingers there are in each word. Listen to this song (another one of my favourites!)

Which phonics sounds can you find in the words? Try writing some down. Here is another video to help you find more words with the 'tious' and 'cious' sound endings.

They are very tricky spellings but have a go at saying them with the "shus" sound at the end.

Well done to Melisa and Mason for completing a quiz on Accelerated Reader yesterday. :)

Rafa! Congratulations, you are the Star of the Week. Your writing piece, retelling the story of The Resurrection was sensational. You have also been working so hard with your Maths, writing excellent explanations to the word problems.

I have posted some question for about Easter for you to discuss as a family.

I am holding the large Palm Branch Fr. Perry gave to the school on Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent. Please send in pictures of the Palms you made at home to:   Remember to type into the subject bar HLPY and your class number.

The Servant King

Questions to think about:

Why do we call Jesus the Servant King?

How did he arrive into Jerusalem?

How was his arrival different to a King?

What did the crowds shout?

What did they do?

The Passover

Exodus 12:14 , Matt:26:17,  Luke 22:7

Jesus arrived in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover.

What was Jesus remembering when celebrating passover?

How did Jesus and the apostles celebrate passover?

How do we as Catholics ,remember these events of the in our lives ?

How do Jewish people celebrate the Passover today?

What did Jesus do to show he was the servant King?

The Greatest Commandment

What does Jesus say is the greatest Commandment?

Happy Easter to you and your family

Friday 3rd April 2020

Happy Friday Year 1. It is the day for our big announcement. Who is our Star of the Week? Drum roll please...

Geronimo! Congratulations to Geronimo you are the Star of the Week. You have been the most active on Accelerated Reader and Maths. Geronimo also got 100% in his last reading quiz. Wow! You have sent in some fantastic pictures of what else you have been up to; P.E with Joe, your grammar booklet and some beautiful artwork. You must have been very busy in the last two weeks!

A special mention also to Alan who has been on the Maths and Reading website and has sent some fabulous pictures of working hard on his phonics and grammar booklets.

Well done to everyone else who has been on the Maths and Reading; Amelia, Mason, Scarlett D, Rafael, Scarlett K, Bruno, Jaziah, Melisa, Brian and Maksymilian. Keep up with the hard work and please send in your photos of what you are doing. I absolutely love seeing them all.

Today is the beginning of the Easter Holidays. Please still read everyday for at least 15 minutes. It doesn't have to be a book from school but it can be a book from home, a magazine, a newspaper or anything else you may find interesting. Ask your parents to read stories with you as well. Look on the David Walliams website as he is releasing free audio stories every day at 11 am, so have a listen on

During the holidays try a simple kindness act everyday. Here are a few examples:

  • write or draw what kindness means to you
  • check in on your neighbours in a safe way – perhaps, put a note through their door
  • call or write to a relative
  • draw a rainbow and put it in your window to show hope
  • write down three things you are grateful for
  • do something helpful for a friend or family member – help lay the table or could you keep your bedroom tidy?
  • Can you come up with some of your own ideas?

Most importantly make sure you are staying active, even during the holidays. I have been staying active by; taking part in P.E with Joe, running and walking lots with my 2 dogs-Tango and Kilt. Keeping active and busy whilst inside can prove tricky but it’s really important to stay healthy. Can you create a fitness routine for your family to try? It could include jogging on the spot, jumping jacks or exercises you may have seen on P.E with Joe. Try to make it last ten minutes and ask your family to join in!

Lastly, have a lovely holiday. I will be back in touch on Monday 20th April.

Keep active and keep smiling!

Love from,

Miss Douglas xxx

Tango and Kilt both say hello to you all. They are relaxing in the sunshine at the moment.

Remember to say your prayers.

Father God I come to say thank you for your love today

thank you for my friends and family and all the love you give to me.

Guard me in the dark of night and in the morning send your light.

Take the  Palm Sunday challenge!

Hi Year One.

Good Morning Year one! Tomorrow is Friday which means I will be announcing who is our Star of the Week! There will also be a special award, in place of the attendance award, for the class that has used Accelerated Maths and Reader the most! If you haven't managed it's your day!

Wednesday 1st April 2020

Hi Year 1, I hope you are all well and enjoying lots of different activities at home. Today I thought you could make your own dictionary, similar to the one you have at school. You could include your spelling words, high frequency words, words which include your phonic sounds and words from school and home reading books. Try and write the definitions (meanings) of each word and even some drawings too!  Have a good day and keep active!

David Hockney, one of our great artists painted these beautiful daffodils at home. He said on the news tonight "the source of art is love". Have a go at painting spring flowers which you love.

Miss Douglas,  great picture those Daffodils look like they are growing in what I have for breakfast.

Bran Flakes!

Very unusual.
